Set a budget and read the Budgetometr

A budget is how much you plan to spend in a category each month. moni follows it on every dial and adds it all up in the Budgetometr at the top of Home.

Lesson 7 of 32 3 min
  1. Give a category a budget

Open an expense category, tap ··· and then Edit category. Type how much you plan to spend a month, like 5,000,000 here.

moni’s own calculator stands in for the keyboard here, so you can add up: 3,000,000+2,000,000 becomes 5,000,000.

Edit expense category for Groceries with a budget of 5,000,000 a month
  2. See it on Expenses

Expenses shows how much of all your budgets is spent this month, and how much is left. Each dial fills up as you spend.

A dial with no budget stays flat. Once a category reaches its budget, its dial turns solid black: that’s your sign to slow down.

The Expenses page with 0% spent and 17.44 million rupiahs left, every category with an empty dial
  3. Meet the Budgetometr

The Budgetometr on Home adds up all your budgets. On your very first day it reads Fresh start, with its needle lying flat.

Until you set your first budget, Home shows a dashed note in its place. You can hide it in Settings, under Display on Home.

Home on July 20 with the Budgetometr at 0% and its needle flat, Fresh start, nothing spent yet
  4. Read the needle

The arc is what you’ve spent, the needle is where you would be if you spent evenly. Here, on August 12, it reads On track.

Room to spare means you’re below the plan, Too fast that you’re ahead of it. Rent and other bills count as planned once paid.

Home on August 12 with the Budgetometr at 12%, On track, spending as planned

If something goes wrong

I spend in a category without a budget
It still counts in the Budgetometr, as money spent is money spent, budget or not. Only the dial of that category stays flat, because it has no budget of its own to fill.
Can I change a budget mid-month?
Change it in Edit category whenever you like. The new amount applies from this month on, while the months that are already over keep the budgets they had.
My needle didn’t start at the 1st
In your first month, the needle runs from the day you started to the month’s end, not from the 1st, since nothing spent before that day was ever added to moni.
Paying the rent made it say Too fast
Make the rent repeat, as lesson 14 shows. A repeating payment counts as a bill: once it’s paid, the Budgetometr counts it as planned, not as spending too fast.
My budgets are in different currencies
Each budget is in its own category’s currency. The Budgetometr adds them all up in your main currency at today’s rate, so its total may move a little with the rates.
I don’t want the Budgetometr
Open Menu, then Settings, and turn off Budgetometr under Display on Home. Your budgets keep working on every dial, on the Expenses page and in your Stats.
